mozilla files to delete

Here is the msg I sent to rms about problematic (non)source files in
mozilla, plus his reply.

I ran the file command on everything in the current source tree.  I'm
sure it misidentified some, but for a start I see around 100 files with
questionable provenance, mostly related to plugins and installation.
There are a number of DOS executables (including the 7zstub executable
you noticed), some jar files and other Mac files, etc.  Some of them are
probably ok (that is, they are data files which don't have any source),
while others definitely aren't (like the exe files), but it would take
someone more familiar with these platforms to thoroughly investigate.
I'll append the list.  (I imagine there are more doubtful files not in
this list which I missed in this first run-through.)

Perhaps we could just delete them all, I don't know.  (In some cases it
would probably be better to delete the containing directories.)  That
would take someone more familiar with the mozilla sources who can
actually figure out what they do and whether they are needed.

There are also around 1400 gif files.  But I gather the gif patents have
expired, so we don't have to do anything about those, is that right?
[rms said yes, if we "wait a few days", which we're doing anyway.]

Unfortunately I don't know any volunteers who could help with these jobs
(maybe you do?), and Giuseppe's school starts again next week, so he
will have less time.  But it seems we have considerably more work to do
before we can make a release.  Sigh.

So delete all the executables.  Delete all Word files and files in
Mac-only formats.  Then delete all jar files for which you don't see
source code.  This will greatly reduce the set of problem files.

Then try grepping the makefiles.  Files which are generated from
others with Make, you can remove from the list of problem files.

Then grep for the remaining problem files in README files and see if
there are already descriptions of them.  The descriptions should show
you what to do.

The ones that are left, ask about in Mozilla development mailing
lists.  Save the explanations you receive in README files.  (Please
also suggest that the people who answered add the explanations in
suitable places in the Mozilla sources, since that would be an
improvement in maintainability.)
