Since no one has piped up yet on this, I'll just cough up my two cents. I've
noticed poor font rendering -- and font rendering that does not obey my font
rendering settings -- on my Ubu 9.10 install using anything other than the
Ubuntu Firefox package. I've also noticed the same unpleasantness on other
distributions running FF/Iceweasel disto packages or FF/Icecat/Swiftfox
downloads. So I am inclined to think that this is a problem with the upstream
sources -- and maybe FF 3.5 got lucky in Ubuntu or the Ubuntu packagers patched
the problem. (FWIW and IIRC, FF 3 in 9.04 was also "ugly".)
However, it does seem to be the case that: 1) lots of people seem not to notice
the difference (CRT users perhaps?), 2) some people seem to *prefer* the ugly
rendering, and 3) not a lot of effort seems to be going into nailing the
problem.
