Thank you for reporting a problem, but you need to provide more information before we can reproduce and diagnose the problem. What exactly are the commands and input that worked and did not work? What is the value of GREP_COLOR?
There are lots of bugs with "--color" and "-i" and "--only-matching" in Grep v2.5.1, so you might well have encountered one of them. They are being fixed in CVS but there is no newer released version yet.
