It looks like we won't be adding it back, so thie point is moot.
However, I don't agree that there's a real problem with removing code
that isn't being used. We have CVS; we can always bring it back
later if we need it.

Yes, that's a good suggestion, for stripped-down systems. However, I
doubt whether we'll ever make this the default (at least not for the
forseeable future). Too many people are used to invoking egrep and
fgrep.
