Follow-up Comment #1:
It doesn't block "indefinitely". It blocks until another side opens the FIFO.
grep cannot distinguish the user putting the name of a FIFO on the
command-line deliberately, versus the user putting "*" on the command-line
when a FIFO is part of the current directory. So, this is exactly the use
case for "-D skip".
