compiling grep without using grep

Hello,

I am trying to build grep 2.7 from source on Lynx OS 4.0. The configure 
commmand returns the following:

Checking for grep that handles long lines and -e... configure: error: no 
acceptable grep could be found in: /bin:/.....

So obviously grep tries to use itself in order to build itself ;-) Is there 
some way to compile grep without having a suitable grep already???
