Thanks, that's better than what we had in 2.18, but I'm afraid it's still too complicated, in that it intrudes fgrep and egrep implementation into grep proper. We need separation of concerns, where one can maintain 'grep' without having to worry about 'fgrep'. The current shell script does that, as would a simple C file whose main function uses execlp to run the grep executable. But I expect that any changes along these lines can wait until after 2.19 is out (as can some other cleanups and speedups that I have saved up...).
