Here's a fix for this easier problem.  A simpler readNumber routine to
replace the existing one.

float pushBackBuffer::readNumber(void)
{
    int i;
    char ch;

    i = readInt();
    if ((ch = getPB()) == '.') {
        return convertToFloat(i, readInt());
    }

    putPB(ch);

    return i;
}
