Hi Peter,

your plan sounds great, thanks for checking.

I'm not very surprised that preconv(1) is _usually_ able to detect the
encoding heuristically, the preconv(1) manual page says as much below "Coding
Tags".  Whether the guessing works or not may depend on a lot of things
though, including the operating system, which locales it supports, whether
uchardet is compiled in, and whatnot.  So, better safe than sorry...  :)
