pxegrub chainloader Windows XP

We have a machine with Windows XP newly installed on the IDE secondary
slave disk. During install, this was the only disk and now all other
bios slots also full, so this shows up as (hd3) in grub.

>From a grub booted from (hd0),

map (hd3) (hd0)
chainloader (hd3)+1
boot

brings up XP fine, but when we try this from a pxegrub netbooted from
our server, it doesn't work. Windows 98 works fine from both types of grub.

Ideas, help, experience, sympathy please?
