A line like this boots to default run-level (3)
kernel /bzImage-2.4.9 root=/dev/hda12
This will make it boot into run level 5....
kernel /bzImage-2.4.9 root=/dev/hda12 5
Not very difficult to guess what needs to be done for any other runlevel!
