Ok. Did you look at /boot/grub/device.map to make sure it was correct?
Were you using DevFS? iirc, Grub may not have the right regexp's in the
'grub-install' script to setup device.map properly. You'll probably have
to tweak the device.map manually, and then run the grub shell with the
'--device-map [device map file]' switch.
