Try another combination:
root (hd0,1)
kernel /debian/linux root=/dev/ram disksize=1.44
initrd /debian/images-1.44/root.bin

AFAIK, `initrd=' doesn't mean anything to Grub's `kernel' command, nor
does `disksize=' mean anything to its `initrd' command.
