Thanks for everyones help...I think I got this worked out.  One of my
problems was that the kernel on the drive got corrupted...not sure how
that happened. This particular problem manifested itself by booting the
grub shell, then saying "uncompressing Linux ...OK.  booting" then the
machine would to a restart.

I couldn't figure out what was causing it to just hang at the word
"GRUB".  After I reinstalled it seemed to work fine.

I also didn't realize that you needed to have the stage1,stage2 and
appropriate stage1_5 files on your valid root partition before doing the
setup...makes sense though.  I thought the setup command was going to
copy those files from the grub boot floppy.

Thanks to the grub developers for making a great product.
