debian has a 'grub-floppy' command to make a grub boot disk.

why is it gnut, it should be grub.

try using 'grub-install' to install grub. boot linux using your rescue
disc. then run 'grub-install /dev/hda'.

grub-install will copy the needed files for you and create the
device.map file.


also maybe try a newer version of grub if you still have no success.
