Here is some info from my system, seems that Red Hat packaged the GNU
tarball but otherwise it is unchanged and the command seems to be in there
(and work):

    GRUB  version 0.91  (640K lower / 3072K upper memory)

 [ Minimal BASH-like line editing is supported.  For the first word, TAB
   lists possible command completions.  Anywhere else TAB lists the possible
   completions of a device/filename. ]

grub> help savedefault
savedefault: savedefault [--stage2=STAGE2_FILE] [--default=DEFAULT] [--once]
    Save DEFAULT as the default boot entry in STAGE2_FILE. If
    '--once' is specified, the default is reset after the next reboot.
