You don't need to touch the labels.
Are you having a redhat system and you replaced the redhat kernel with
your own ?
And you did not make an initrd ?
More details would be helpful :
- fdisk -l ( the partitions of all your hard drives )
- cat /boot/grub/grub.conf ( your grub configuration )
