install grub into /dev/hda not /dev/hda1 then use this menu entry for
winXP
title XP
root (hd0,2)
makeactive
chainloader +1
and probably this one for linux, or something similiar:
title linux
root (hd0,0)
kernel /vmlinuz root=/dev/hda1 ro
