Hi again,

I just re-checked if this bug* is in 0.97.
Yes, it is :-(

Here are the steps, I did to reproduce the behavior:
- installed grub 0.97 into /opt/grub
- booted a live cd with my (only) HDD connected to the HPT372 chip
- mounted & chrooted my HDD, executed /opt/grub/sbin/grub and on the
shell:
root (hd0,0)
setup (hd0)
=> no errors so far, then the reboot and: error 21 :-(

And the reverse check, that the error is really caused by the HPT chip:
- I replugged the HDD back onto the VIA chipset
- booted a live cd, mounted & chrooted my HDD, executed grub and on the
shell:
root (hd0,0)
setup (hd0)
=> no errors, then the reboot: works fine.

Bye.
Thorsten

Hi.

I'm having trouble using grub since I upgraded to a version > 0.93.
I always get the "error 21", so grub is unable to find the hard disk.
The problem is related to the hpt37x chip, where my (only) harddisk is
connected to.

There are several other people having the same problem:

http://www.mail-archive.com/address@hidden/msg09425.html
http://savannah.gnu.org/bugs/?func=detailitem&item_id=6846
http://lists.debian.org/debian-user-german/2003/01/msg02943.html
http://article.gmane.org/gmane.comp.boot-loaders.grub.bugs/3059

It has been working with grub <= 0.93 and grub is also working when I
put my harddisk to the VIA controller chip - but I have to reinstall
grub with "root (hd0,0)" and "setup (hd0)", because just attaching the
disk to the other controler doesn't help.
I've tried grub 0.94 and grub 0.96.

Bye.
Thorsten
