Grub legacy lacked of the splashimage hack and RedHat added it. Grub legacy did not conform to LSB and Ubuntu decided that stage* files had to go to /lib/grub so that it conforms to LSB. Grub developers are now working a lot on Grub2. In my opinion they should focus on Grub2 and make a so good boot loader that no distribution makes its own patch. My sad conclusion is that your /lib/grub issue is not so important compared to the development of grub2. adrian15
