Details:

What is my aim:

Booting from USB stick.

Problem 1: works fine until you have 2048-byte hdwr sectors, that seemingly
grub can't stand ( partitions are recognized but filesystems are "type
unknown" thought they are VFAT and Ext2 and linux kernel is happy with them).



Workaround: Have a CD-ROM with only Grub, Linux kernel, initrd and menu.lst
on it. Every else will be on the USB stick which can be read by Linux kernel.
The CD-ROM was built exactly as told by Grub manual.

Problem 2: selecting a line from the menu gets "Error 15: File not found"

Workaround: enter the grub shell and type exactly the same lines ( root,
kernel, initrd) as in menu.lst, and all works fine --- except the kernel line
is very long and it is very inconvenient to type it at each boot.

Perhaps related problem:

Under grub shell, find /boot/grub/menu.lst fails but testload
/boot/grub/menu.lst works fine ( the same occurs for vmlinuz and initrd.gz),
other commands also work fine like blocklist, kernel ..., only find fails ! 


Grub is from Slax which inherited it from Slackware.

Reproduced exactly te same in 3 different environment ( Dell Inspiron 6400,
VMware + iso, VMware + actual CD)
