root (hdx,y)
kernel /boot/grub/core.img 
boots to the grub2 menu and that boots Ubuntu 9.10 OK.
I re-installed Ubuntu to a re-formatted sda14 (ext3 this time) and told the
installer to put the boot loader in sda14.
Chainloading with :-
root (hd0,13)
chainloader +1
still fails with error 13 as per original report.
>From within Ubuntu I then ran:-
sudo grub-install /dev/sda14
that reported success and device.map looked OK.
Chainloading still fails. 
Any ideas?
