Well, it is actually booting now, much to my surprise. Apparently mdadm
was the missing piece.
However, I'd just like to remind you that this command is still failing. I
don't know whether it is a bug or not. Details of the commands used to
create the chroot are given below.

/usr/sbin/grub-setup: error: unable to identify a filesystem in hd0; safety
check can't be performed.
Again, I suggest grub warn if mdadm is not installed in such a case.
