Details:

On amd64 Linux, grub-install.in tries to autodetect  target="x86_64-efi" by
finding /sys/firmware/efi at line 268.

But module efivars is not loaded until line 761.

So if efivars is not already loaded:

# grub2-efi-64-install 
source_dir doesn'\''t exist. Please specify --target or --directory
