TANSTAAUPUT (there ain't no such thing as a universally portable Unix
tool).
sed is more portable than awk. it also suffers from line length
limits on many platforms.
anyway, I'm working on a new doc snarfer (using C, sed and guile).
should be ready soon, deities and connectivity permitting.
