Hmm, I think we should just copy the gc_os_dep.c from CVS HEAD over to
the 1.6 branch.  That version has code that covers all platforms that
use glibc, independent of the hardware.

I have done so.  It should appear in the snapshot from tomorrow (or
the day after tomorrow).
