   Why are you using gzip to handle archives created by PKZIP?  I
thought that PKZIP worked with ZIP archives, and that gzip's ZIP-archive
capabilities were quite limited.

   There are programs which were designed to deal with ZIP archives, and
they have been used on z/OS:

      http://www.info-zip.org/

   I'm not a z/OS user, so I know nothing, but there is at least one in
the Info-ZIP group, so you may be able to get some help if you have
problems building or using the Info-ZIP Zip and UnZip programs on z/OS.

   It's not my program, so I know nothing, but I would not bet that gzip
on any system type can do this.  The Info-ZIP programs definitely _can_
handle large-file ZIP archives on Solaris (although a version number
would be an interesting datum when describing any OS).  HP-UX, Tru64,
and VMS, too, for that matter.
