I am not sure what the problem is with the current code. In your mail you said
that vmstat wouldn't report your memory size correctly, but it might have
reported correctly the available memory, ie the physical memory minus the
reserved memory.
Is this what we are talking about?

useful. This leaves the changes to use memset, which are fine. It also
leaves changes some 0 values to -1. I can't see my logic for this.
