Jeff, I think he meant running syslogd.

No running syslogd as a non-priviledged user will not currently work.
However, the chief syslogd engineer(Marcus Brinkmann 8-) had propose
this idea before.  We did not explore this avenue.

When using libc syslog/openlog/closelog functions, they
will look at the service and contact syslogd at the default port.
So to make this a general logging facility we would have to modify
logger(1) and the syslog(3) suite of functions to provide easy
access for this facility.  This is not rule out, since we could provide
an enhance libsyslog.a for applications that needs it.

But at the current time, pretty much all the dev. off inetutils
are busy with other task, I do not see this coming together anytime
soon.

check you syslogd manual it should have a switch to redirect syslog.pid
It probably fails or hang on the select()/poll().
