Follow-up Comment #1:

After some initial confusion, this was an easy fix: In the past Kawa
represented Scheme symbols using a java.lang.String, but this was changed in
early 2007.  I still run across code which wasn't updated as needed - as here.
 Which just emphasizes the importance of test suites.

I checked in the fix and your test-case.
