I've read the thread. As for now, libmatheval is supporting simple
expressions and simple mathematical functions. Take a look in
documentation for evaluator_create() function to see list of what is
supported. So, you could use libmatheval for expressions like one you
mentioned in your message ("(1+(8^(0.5)))"). However, libmatheval is
not yet supporting gsl_* functions. This is among first items on my
to-do list regarding libmatheval and I hope to have it implemented soon;
but I wouldn't know to tell you exactly when.
