ouch! I should have done this before asking. Sorry.

The problem seems to be that I have the Century Schoolbook fonts in the  
Windows\fonts directory. Then the runtime error occurs no matter if the  
fonts are too in usr\share\gs\fonts or not.

Removing those fonts from Windows\fonts solves the problem, but it doesn't  
allows me to use them in other applications :-\

perhaps am I doing something wrong?
