I don't fully understand your comment.  IMHO, the length of a beamlet should 
stay
fixed; if necessary, increase the space under the beam to get a distance big
enough avoid a collision.  Under rare circumstances I can imagine that the 
beamlet
gets shortened a bit, but it should never become longer.
