This bug still exists; the patch has just disguised it since it results 
in no default
setting for hairpinToBarline: \override Voice.hairpinToBarline = ##t is 
bad syntax.

Explicitly setting hairpinToBarline shows the problem lies elsewhere:

 c''1\< \break R1\!
}
