Even if the beam are separated, the notes remain sixteenth note <http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sixteenth_note>. So why would one wants to separate the beams? Is it from an interpretation perspective?

hmm, the test in my copy of the docs (2.11.49-1, which claims to be proofs for 2.11.48) does fail.
