Actually I think repeating the bar numbers can make it easier for a conductor 
because bar 17 (say) always follows bar 16 both first and second time.

I have been doing an Orchestral Conducting course for the past year, which 
required looking at a vast number of scores. My impression is that both 
strategies are used more or less equally often. Sometimes different editions of 
the same work do it differently. Some editions don't use bar numbering at all.
