http://code.google.com/p/lilypond/issues/detail?id=1833The work that is done here is quite awkward: some music is deconstructed and something quite different but exposing a similar effect is synthesized. There should be a way (TM) in the bowels of LilyPond to hand this "bundle" on without a manual conversion.
The key point, however, is that it is bowel works. The music function changes don't even touch that area. I have a some nice helpers for recursing into music and doing selected changes (cf map-some-music) but it does not even look like Neil is recursing here.
I would certainly prefer if this kind of functionality could be written trivially here, but that will mean that (more generally useful but probably harder) complexity has to go elsewhere.
