I've heard of ISPs where you had to authenticate using
POP, before sending using SMTP, but I hadn't heard it
give such a nice name.
As far as I know there is no RFC, and I'd be really surprised
if there ever was. It can't be standardized, it's a back door
so that a client doesn't have to use SMTP AUTH (RFC2554).
Any idea what people want from it?
