Perhaps you could try repeating that step from within a gdb session to
get the callstack of the crash.

You could do a do a binary search/build of the recent changes to track
down which patch caused the problem (if you are certain it is not a bad
gcc build..).

A small repeatable test case would help us find the problem if you
cannot find the cause.
