Follow-up Comment #3, bug #31430 (project make):
I've updated the patch, so here is a new version of the patch:
http://www.dwheeler.com/misc/shell-assignment.v2.patch
This new "version 2" uses the func_shell routine instead of popen(), so it
should work anywhere that $(shell ...) works. I also added documentation and
even more tests. All the tests, including the new ones, pass. It should be
"ready to go".
