Weve been waiting for you to say something about it, Isuppose. I should have spoken to Mother about itbefore this. And the fact that his cousinGilbert was not present at the moment gave him the courage to sayit. We did live for a while in KansasCity, but for the last three years theyve been out there. The luxury and charm as opposed to this of whichhe was a part. It was a mistake to put him down there in the first place. I have thought of that but I havent been able toattend to it before. Thenturning to the family, he added: Excuse me, folks, Ill be backin a minute. Well, you had better have John put on some liniment and a bandageand call a veterinary. To Clyde, even after theGreen-Davidson and the Union League, it seemed a very beautifulroom. By the way, how much is he being paid now? We all like Lycurgus, only after Chicago I suppose itwill not mean so very much to you. Thats no place forhim and I wont have him there any longer. I should have spoken to Mother about itbefore this. Hemight see to it, for instance, that his father heard onlyunfavorable things about him. You agreed to it in the first place when Isuggested it, didnt you? At any rate, it would be interesting to know whether he was rich. Mother has been saying that you werecoming to call one of these days. Just a minute,Dolge, he called to some one outside. If so, it wouldntbe possible to keep him there very long. Oh, I like it very much, he observed, exerting himself to becongenial and to smile. But thereason I called you up here to-day is this. Aperson without any experience can think a lot, but when it comes todoing, hes not there. And anything less than that is a liability. It would endanger his prospects inconnection with this new development. Well, I hope youll like it, now that youre here, she began, genially. She motioned to a large divanbetween them. >From this Clyde wondered how long he was to be left in that dimworld below stairs. No, sir, not that I know of, replied Gilbert dourly. And at once he began to think of the needof a dress suit, or at least a tuxedo and trousers. Oh, Idont believe I can stay a moment if he wont behave better thanthis. We knew it was not verypleasant down there, but we couldnt do anything more for you atthe time. We did live for a while in KansasCity, but for the last three years theyve been out there. It contained so many handsome pieces of furniture and suchrich rugs and hangings. Hesmiled and added: I was out of the city when you came on or Iwould have seen you. There werelamps, a tall clock, a great table. Theres another matter I want to talk to you about. Mother has been saying that you werecoming to call one of these days. Well, yes, sir, that is, I wouldnt say that I like it exactly, replied Clyde quite honestly.
