Gayheart had let the shop get so dusty that it
wasnt apleasant place to practise in. They now lay in the bottomof Lucys
trunk.
He kissed her with love, as he always did when
hekissed her at all, on her lips and eyes and hair. He had sung that for her in the
beginning, when she first went tohim.
Conceited and canny he was most days of the
month;but on occasion something flashed out of him. Pauline broke an egg into the
hot saucepan. The tides that raced through the open worldnever came here. A wild
kind ofexcitement flared up in her. Paulinebrought in a platter of mutton chops; the
coffeepot and vegetableswere already on the table. She opened the window softly
andknelt down beside it to breathe the cold air.
No,you mustnt practise much while you are at
home.
She must look out for herself from now on, and she
coulddo it. Milton came, and Harry stepped aside and motioned him to thewindow. Then
she would lie awake for the restof the night, shivering.
Now he meant to walk round the block and look in on
thatscene again.
And I hope you had plentyof fun along with it. She
and her father had beenplaying some sonatas of Mozart after he came home from the
shop.
But was generosity ever agrace when it came with a
pull?
But by the time he reached the west corner he
hadrecovered himself, and he resumed his way north. Wasnt it like the quality
ofmercy and the gentle dew?
