I suspect the usual reason - some developers don't care much about
compatibility, etc.

I will see if there's a fix.

I tested libtool 1.5.2 on a couple of platforms where it didn't make
shared libraries for c++ in older releases, finding that it did worse in
1.5.2 (BeOS and QNX). I'll remove it from those boxes since it's wasting
diskspace.
