This woman has half killed me; and she asks have I
hurtmyself! No good ever comes out of banks for the likes of us. That will be quite
all right, sir, thank you. How can I afford to lose a client with suchan income and
such a temper? It makes the jury see you inthat light from the start. You think your
fathers money places you above the law? You never told me who you were bringing me
to see: you said twofriends.
It was anunprovoked, brutal, cowardly assault. One
wife is enough for me,though by my religion I am allowed four.
Itwas on its last legs when you saw it, sir. Do
youexpect me to pay more than the British Government?
Well, you will have to be content with two wives if
youmarry me.
How can I afford to lose a client with suchan
income and such a temper?
I will set fire to the hotel if
necessary.
Weve a perfect right to be in herhotel if we pay
our way just like anybody else.
But I dont understand why Sagamore should
haveplayed such a trick on me.
When I think of my father allordinary men seem to
me the merest trash. Oh, it wasnt only that, madam: that part of it waseasy and
pleasant enough. I am not thinking of the courts: there is little justicethere for
anybody.
Tell the landlord to stop the first one thatcomes
along and buy it.
Thats not the way to get employment: poking your
nose intoplaces that dont concern you. When I want anything Ilose my head so
completely about it that I always get it.
My parents would never have got the pricefor the
freehold that she gave them. How can I afford to lose a client with suchan income
and such a temper?
That is why Sagamore should not have brought me
here.
The doctor who found me can tell youwhat my
condition was.
It makes the jury see you inthat light from the
start.
He is stronger than I am: he can batterme, torture
me, kill me. I never raised a hand to you except inself-defence. Oh, dont sit there
dithering: you dont know whatshe may be doing. TheEgyptian doctor recommended our
chef to him; and he takes his mealshere too.
