I bet it didn't hang... it was checking the disk for defects.
(You want to do this for swap! ;-)

That is because you interrupted it before it had finished.

Agreed. There is no reliable way of communicating CHS values
from the BIOS to Linux, unfortunately :-(

I don't understand how! It uses the same algorithm as Parted.
What version of fdisk are you using?
