strange ext3 layout error

strange ext3 layout error |

I am trying to resize a partition:
parted /dev/hdc
(parted) print - returns correct looking information
(parted) resize 2 103 6311 - this returns an error message ( ...strange
layout for ext2 file system...)
the file system is indeed ext3, so the error is sensible, do i need, somehow
to specify the filesystem?
