Andrew,
I only have vague recollections of this patch... I'll dig more into why
it was needed if you want.
The usage of "-Wl,-lc,-static -static" is non-standard and not
guaranteed to work. From what I remember, this failed most notably on
ppc64. The attached patch achieves similar results and is considered
"correct".
