I'm the same one who reported this bug way back (see
http://lists.gnu.org/archive/html/bug-parted/2003-12/msg00043.html ).
The same drive behaved the same as the previous bug when tried recently with
parted 1.6.14 on all new hardware except the harddrive. However, I found and
corrected the cause of the problem. Parted segfaulted because there was a
directory named Half-life containing only a directory named Half-life
containing only a directory named Half-life and so on. It seemed to continue
endlessly (*). I'm guessing an error that once happened to the filesystem
(fat32) caused the directory to loop into itself or something.
In windows I was unable to remove the directory (can't remember version), in
GNU/Linux it was removed without a problem. After this, parted would never
segfault on that drive again. I believe operations to partitions on that
drive other than the one in question did work before the fix.
Just wanted anyone who cares to know.
*) I made a quick bash loop to cd continuesly into subdirectories, after a
couple of seconds I figured I wasn't going to see the end any time soon, so I
just quit the loop and removed the entire tree.
(PS, I'm not subscribing, please send mail directly if comments, thanks!)
