new probe_partition_for_geom() in CVS, "holiday"...

Hi all,

I've just committed a reimplementation of probe_partition_for_geom().
I thought of a more elegant solution, and I've put lots of comments
in this time.  (But please suggest more!)  Hopefully this will
get rid of all the bugs!

I'm going to be travelling until next Wednesday.  I don't know how much
