Mmm, now I'm confused. I just formatted an 8Mb USB stick using mkdosfs .. then mounted in using;
mount -t vfat -shortname=winnt /dev/sda1 /mnt

It seems to work perfectly .. 256Mb limit ??????

Well, you say;

How about saying a lower arbitrary size .. say 1.2Mb .. ???
